A new school must be certified to operate by SCHEV prior to engaging in any activities related to postsecondary education, either online or at a physical site within the Commonwealth of Virginia. Postsecondary schools may not advertise, recruit students, hold classes, or accept any fees or tuition monies in Virginia until they have received a Certificate to Operate from SCHEV.
Participation in a New School Orientation session is the first step in the application process for entities seeking certification to operate a postsecondary school in Virginia. Certification application materials, including the Intent to Operate and Name Acknowledgment, will only be accepted from individuals who have attended New School Orientation. Online orientation sessions for both vocational and degree-granting schools are scheduled every six weeks. To register for an orientation session, please click here.
